On May 9th, more than fifty US activists came together at a Global Citizen event in New York, to let the world know that refugees are welcome not only in this country, but across the globe.
We are witnessing a record number of displaced civilians
According to UNHCR figures, an unprecedented 65.6 million people around the world have been forced from their homes. Among them are nearly 22.5 million refugees, over half of whom are under the age of eighteen. There are also 10 million stateless people who have been denied a nationality and access to basic rights such as education, healthcare, employment, and freedom of movement.
We are now living in a world where nearly twenty people are forcibly displaced from their homes every minute, as a result of conflict or persecution.
